The estimated 947,000 households that tuned in to watch beat ESPN's previous record for a MLS broadcast set in 1996 during the league's first match - a game between DC United and San Jose Clash.
That drew an average of 1.1 million viewers. The Chelsea Galaxy game was watched by a 27,000 sell-out crowd at the Los Angeles team's home ground in Carson.
